How these figures are counted
  • Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
  • Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
  • Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
  • Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Arterial Disease, often called PAD, is a condition where the arteries that carry blood to your legs and feet become narrowed or blocked. This usually happens because of a build-up of fatty deposits on the artery walls over time, a process known as atherosclerosis. When the arteries narrow, less blood can flow through them, which means the muscles and tissues in your legs may not get enough oxygen. This can cause symptoms like aching, cramping, or heaviness in the legs when walking, and the symptoms often ease with rest. Some people have very mild symptoms or none at all, while others may notice that wounds on their feet or legs are slow to heal.

PAD is fairly common in Australia, particularly among people over the age of 50. It tends to occur more often in people who smoke or have smoked, those living with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, and those with a family history of heart or vascular disease. Indigenous Australians and people in rural and remote areas can face a higher risk due to a range of health and social factors. Because PAD affects the arteries throughout the body, people diagnosed with it are also at a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, which is why doctors tend to look at the whole cardiovascular system, not just the legs.

Treatment for PAD generally focuses on two main goals: managing symptoms and reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events. This typically involves lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and increasing physical activity, alongside medications to help manage cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood clotting. In more significant cases, procedures to open up or bypass the blocked arteries may be considered. A GP will usually work with specialists such as vascular surgeons or cardiologists to figure out the most appropriate approach for each individual. Regular monitoring and check-ups are an important part of managing the condition over time.
