Atrial Fibrillation
Plain English clinical trial information, updated daily from ClinicalTrials.gov and public government registries. Not medical advice.
How these figures are counted
- Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
- Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
- Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
- Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation, often called AF or AFib, is a condition where the heart beats in an irregular and sometimes fast rhythm. Normally, the heart follows a steady, organised electrical pattern to pump blood around the body. In AF, the upper chambers of the heart (called the atria) receive chaotic electrical signals, causing them to quiver rather than beat in a smooth, coordinated way. This irregular beating means the heart may not pump blood as efficiently as usual, and blood can sometimes pool and form clots, which is why AF can increase the risk of stroke.
AF is one of the most common heart rhythm conditions in Australia. It affects an estimated 500,000 or more Australians, and that number is growing as the population ages. While AF can occur in younger people, it becomes more common from middle age onwards. Some people have no symptoms at all and only find out through a routine check-up, while others notice a fluttering sensation in the chest, shortness of breath, tiredness, or dizziness.
When it comes to managing AF, doctors generally focus on a few key areas: controlling the heart rate or rhythm, and reducing the risk of stroke, often through blood-thinning medications. Some people may be offered procedures such as electrical cardioversion, which aims to reset the heart's rhythm, or a procedure called catheter ablation. Lifestyle factors such as managing weight, alcohol intake, and blood pressure are also considered important. Everyone's situation is different, so a cardiologist or GP will work with the individual to discuss what options may be appropriate for them.
