Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, based on the most up-to-date international medical guidelines.
- People who have a narrowing (stricture) in part of their bowel — in the small intestine or large intestine, or at a surgical join — where the section of bowel before the narrowing has become stretched or widened to more than 2.5cm, as shown on a medical scan (MRI, CT, or ultrasound).
- People whose scans show signs of inflammation in the bowel near the narrowing — specifically, a bowel wall thickness of 5mm or more, or an inflammation score of 3 or higher on a standard medical scoring system.
- People who are already scheduled to have a procedure called endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD), where a small balloon is used during a scope procedure to gently widen a narrowed section of bowel.
- People whose Crohn's disease medications have not changed in the 3 months before joining the trial — this includes immune-suppressing medicines, biologic medicines, steroids, or special liquid nutrition programmes.
- People for whom no medication changes are planned in the 3 months after joining the trial (though the treating doctor may still adjust treatment if medically necessary, which may affect which part of the study results that person is included in).
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose treating doctor has decided that the balloon dilation procedure is not appropriate for them, for any reason related to their specific type of narrowing or their overall health.
- People who have had a change in their Crohn's disease medication — either a different dose or a different medicine — in the 3 months before their scheduled balloon dilation procedure.
