Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 40 years or older, of any gender
- People who are current smokers or ex-smokers with a significant smoking history (at least 10 "pack-years," which is roughly the equivalent of smoking one pack a day for 10 years)
- People who have previously been admitted to hospital due to worsening breathlessness (with or without increased coughing, mucus, or discoloured mucus), where doctors suspected a COPD flare-up serious enough to refer them to a COPD specialist centre
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose hospital visit for similar symptoms was found by doctors to be caused by something other than a COPD flare-up, such as chest injury, neurological conditions, severe infection, cancer, or anaemia
- People who are already enrolled in another study that may interfere with this one
- People for whom a breathing test called spirometry is not safe to perform — for example, those with coughing up blood, a detached retina, or active tuberculosis
- People who, in the trial team's opinion, would not be able to follow the study procedures and attend follow-up appointments — for example, due to another serious illness, alcohol or drug issues, dementia, or a severe psychiatric condition
- People who have recently had a heart attack, unstable chest pain, or a heart rhythm problem requiring specialised heart care
- People who have been diagnosed with a stroke, dementia, a progressive neurological condition, or a psychiatric disorder that requires specialist care
- People whom the recruiting doctor considers unsuitable for the study for any other reason (confirm with trial site)
