Stroke patients may be eligible if they:

  • Score below 28 on a standard Parkinson's disease movement assessment (UPDRS Part III)
  • Have a stable condition and stable medication
  • Have an abnormal walking pattern
  • Are able to walk without braces or walking aids, but walk with an abnormal pattern

Multiple sclerosis patients may be eligible if they:

  • Are under 60 years old
  • Score above 24 on a standard memory and thinking test
  • Have a disability level score between 3 and 5 on a standard MS disability scale (EDSS)
  • Have had a stable condition with no relapses or worsening in the last 6 months
  • Have an abnormal walking pattern, such as unsteadiness, slowing down, or mild muscle stiffness (Ashworth score below 2)
  • Are able to walk without braces or walking aids

Who may not be able to join:

Stroke patients may not be eligible if they:

  • Have had strokes affecting more than one area, or both sides of the brain
  • Have a condition called "neglect," where one side of space or the body is ignored (confirm with trial site)
  • Have a foot and ankle condition called equinism, where the foot is fixed in a downward position (confirm with trial site)
  • Have significant muscle stiffness (Ashworth score of 2 or above)
  • Have a tight, non-flexible Achilles tendon (the tendon at the back of the ankle)
  • Have received neurotoxin injections (such as Botox) in the 3 months before the study
  • Have had a muscle-relaxing medication called Baclofen started or changed in the week before the study begins
  • Have another condition that significantly affects the use of their legs
  • Have received a rehabilitation treatment involving music in the year before the study

Parkinson's disease patients may not be eligible if they:

  • Have another condition that significantly affects the use of their legs
  • Have any changes made to their Parkinson's medications during the study
  • Have received a rehabilitation treatment involving music in the year before the study

Multiple sclerosis patients may not be eligible if they:

  • Have another condition that significantly affects the use of their legs
  • Have received neurotoxin injections (such as Botox) in the 3 months before the study
  • Have had a muscle-relaxing medication called Baclofen started or changed in the week before the study begins
