Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are older than 40 years of age
  • You are an eligible U.S. Veteran
  • You have been diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD), confirmed by a vascular test or medical imaging
  • You have had leg pain or cramping when walking (a condition called intermittent claudication) that has been stable for at least 2 months, without signs of severe limb-threatening problems
  • You have a safe place available where you can do walking exercises

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have had an amputation of part or all of your leg
  • You have severe PAD with pain at rest, open sores, or tissue damage on your legs or feet
  • You cannot walk without a walker, or you use a wheelchair
  • You speak a language other than English
  • You have significant vision or hearing problems that would interfere with walking or taking part in the study
  • You are unable or unwilling to visit the medical center as required, or unable or unwilling to use the technology needed for the study
  • Your ability to walk is mainly limited by a condition other than PAD
  • You have an active or unstable heart condition, such as unstable chest pain, dangerous heart rhythm problems, a recent heart attack or stroke, or other serious heart-related findings (confirm with trial site)
  • You have severe heart failure or severe heart-related chest pain (confirm with trial site)
  • You have had major surgery, including leg blood vessel surgery or bone/joint surgery, in the past 3 months, or you expect to have such surgery in the next 9 months
  • You have a serious ongoing illness such as a lung condition requiring constant oxygen use, a brain/nerve condition like Parkinson's Disease that affects your walking, or cancer that required treatment in the past 2 years (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
  • You have had a heart attack, stroke, or heart bypass surgery in the past 3 months
  • You have a mental health condition that could affect your ability to consent to or take part in the study, including memory problems, dementia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or recent thoughts of harming yourself or others (confirm with trial site)
  • You are already doing regular exercise at a level similar to what this study would require
  • You are currently taking part in another clinical trial or a structured exercise program such as cardiac rehabilitation
  • The study team determines for any other reason that the study is not a good fit for you
