Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are right-handed
  • You can read and speak in English
  • If you have bulimia nervosa: You have been diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, meaning you have had at least one binge eating episode and one self-induced vomiting episode per week for at least three months, and your binge episodes are always followed by self-induced vomiting
  • If you have bulimia nervosa: If you have recently changed any medication that affects your mood, appetite, or weight, your dose has been stable for at least 6 weeks
  • If you are a healthy volunteer: You have not had any binge eating or purging episodes in the past three months
  • If you are a healthy volunteer: You have never been diagnosed with an eating disorder, either now or in the past

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have had gastric bypass surgery in the past
  • You have a medical condition that is currently affecting your eating or weight, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or thyroid disease
  • You have needed to be hospitalised for a medical or mental health reason in the past three months
  • You have ever been diagnosed with psychosis or bipolar disorder
  • You have a history of a neurological condition or brain injury, such as a stroke or a head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for more than 10 minutes
  • You currently have a substance use disorder
  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is below 19 kg/m²
  • You are currently having thoughts of suicide that would require hospitalisation
  • You have any metal implants or other reasons you cannot safely have an MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a food allergy that cannot be worked around by swapping out foods in the study's test snack
