Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 85 years old
  • You have had an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) within the last 30 days, linked to a 70%–99% narrowing of a major artery inside the brain, as seen on a special scan called a CTA
  • The affected blood vessel measures between 2.0mm and 4.5mm in diameter (confirm with trial site)
  • The narrowed section of the artery is no longer than 14mm (confirm with trial site)
  • Your level of disability after the stroke is mild to moderate, based on a standard medical scoring scale called the modified Rankin Scale (confirm with trial site)
  • You understand what the study involves and have agreed in writing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your stroke happened fewer than 7 days before joining the study
  • You have additional significant narrowing or blockages in blood vessels near the affected artery (with some exceptions — confirm with trial site)
  • You have narrowing in both vertebral arteries (arteries at the back of the brain) and it is unclear which one caused your stroke (with some exceptions — confirm with trial site)
  • You have narrowing in only one vertebral artery while the other is completely normal
  • Your stroke was caused by a blockage in a very small, specific type of artery called a perforating artery
  • Your scan shows heavy calcium deposits at the site of the narrowing
  • You have had any bleeding in or around the brain in the past 6 weeks
  • Your artery narrowing is caused by a condition other than fatty buildup in the arteries (such as certain diseases, infections, or other medical conditions — confirm with trial site)
  • You have previously had a stent placed in an artery inside your brain
  • You have a known heart condition that is likely causing blood clots to travel to the brain
  • You have a brain tumour, a brain aneurysm, or an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain
  • You are unable to take two blood-thinning medications at the same time
  • You have allergies or medical reasons that prevent you from receiving heparin, rapamycin, contrast dye, or anaesthesia
  • Your blood count results are below certain levels (low haemoglobin or low platelets — confirm with trial site)
  • You have serious liver or kidney problems
  • Your blood does not clot normally and this cannot be corrected (confirm with trial site)
  • You have had major surgery in the past 30 days or have major surgery planned within the next 90 days
  • You also need treatment at the same time for narrowing in the kidney, hip, or heart arteries
  • Your life expectancy is less than one year
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have a cognitive, emotional, or mental health condition that would prevent you from attending follow-up appointments
  • The trial doctors have another medical reason they feel makes participation unsuitable for you
  • You are already taking part in another clinical study that could interfere with this one
