Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are female
  • People aged 45 or older
  • People diagnosed with a specific type of early-stage breast cancer — either invasive breast cancer up to 3.5 cm in size that is estrogen-receptor positive and has not spread to nearby lymph nodes, or a non-invasive type called DCIS that is low-to-moderate grade, under 2.5 cm, estrogen-receptor positive, and found on a mammogram
  • People for whom breast-conserving surgery (removing only the tumour, not the whole breast) is considered appropriate by their doctor
  • People who have no medical reasons preventing them from receiving radiation therapy
  • People who have had a mammogram within the 6 months before the planned procedure
  • People considered healthy enough to undergo a lumpectomy under general anaesthetic
  • People whose treatment plan includes a type of radiation given during surgery (called IORT — intraoperative radiation therapy)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose breast cancer is known to have spread to the lymph nodes under the arm
  • People whose cancer is found in more than one area of the same breast, where a single lumpectomy would not be able to remove all of it with clear margins
  • People known to carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation (inherited gene changes linked to breast cancer risk)
  • People who are receiving chemotherapy before surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy)
  • People who are pregnant
