Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 95 years of age who have had a blockage in a specific artery in the brain (the internal carotid artery or a main branch of the middle cerebral artery).
- People whose stroke symptoms were measured as moderately severe or worse on a standard stroke scale (a score of at least 6 on the NIHSS) at the time of hospital admission, and who had little to no disability before the stroke occurred (a score of 0 or 1 on the modified Rankin scale).
- People whose brain scan shows that a large enough portion of the brain tissue is still potentially salvageable, based on a standard scoring system called ASPECTS (a score of at least 6).
- People who had a specific set of brain imaging scans — including a standard CT scan, a CT scan of the blood vessels, and a CT scan measuring blood flow — all performed at the hospital running the trial.
- People in whom blood flow to the affected artery was successfully restored to a good level (a score of 2b to 3 on the mTICI scale) after the clot removal procedure.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stroke was caused by a build-up of fatty deposits in a large artery, a tear in an artery wall, or other identified causes — or where there are blockages in two connected arteries at the same time (tandem occlusion).
- People who required additional procedures such as balloon widening of an artery (angioplasty) or placement of a small tube to keep the artery open (stenting) after the clot removal procedure.
