Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children who have had one or more episodes of asthma-like symptoms, or who have been treated with certain asthma-related medications (a fast-acting reliever inhaler alone, or combined with a preventer inhaler, and possibly an additional medication called a leukotriene receptor antagonist)
- Children who are between 12 and 71 months old (approximately 1 to 6 years of age)
- Families where the parent or guardian agrees to enrol the child and is willing to follow the trial procedures
- Families where the parent or guardian speaks fluent Danish
Who may not be able to join:
- Children with a known allergy to a group of antibiotics called macrolides
- Children with a known liver problem
- Children with a known kidney problem
- Children known to have a neurological or psychiatric condition
- Children with a known heart electrical condition called a prolonged QT interval (whether present from birth or developed later)
- Children known to have a significantly slow heart rate, an irregular heartbeat, or severe heart failure
- Children showing signs of pneumonia at the time of enrolment, including a very fast breathing rate (over 50 breaths per minute), a high fever (over 39°C), or a raised level of a blood marker called C-reactive protein (over 50)
