Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are a woman aged 18 or older of any race who has been identified as having a higher-than-average risk of developing breast cancer and has been referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC).
  • Your higher risk may be based on a lifetime risk calculation of more than 20%, a tissue finding such as certain types of abnormal breast cells (lobular neoplasia, atypical ductal hyperplasia, or atypia), or a gene mutation known to increase breast cancer risk.
  • You are already scheduled to have a breast MRI and are willing to also have a second breast imaging test (called MBI) within a two-week period.
  • You are willing to have a biopsy if anything unusual is found on either scan.
  • You are willing to fill out a short survey about your experience with both tests after they are completed.
  • If you do not speak English, a language interpreter can be provided to help you.
  • You are able to give written consent to take part in the study.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently pregnant, because the MBI scan requires an injection of a small amount of radioactive material, which is not safe during pregnancy.
  • You are currently pregnant, because the MRI scan also requires an injection of a dye called gadolinium, which is also not considered safe during pregnancy.
