Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with an eating disorder:
- You are between 18 and 39 years old
- You have been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (restrictive type or binge-purge type) or bulimia nervosa, based on standard diagnostic guidelines
For healthy volunteers (comparison group):
- You are between 18 and 39 years old
- Your body weight has stayed within a healthy range (85%–120% of ideal body weight) since your first menstrual period
Who may not be able to join:
For everyone:
- You have a psychotic illness or another serious mental health condition that has required a hospital stay
- You are currently dependent on drugs or alcohol, or test positive for drug use on the day of the brain scan (confirm with trial site regarding marijuana specifics)
- You have a physical health condition such as diabetes or are pregnant, which could affect eating or weight
- You have a neurological condition, a neurodevelopmental disorder, or a history of a head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for more than 30 minutes
- You have any reason you cannot safely have an MRI scan (for example, a metal implant)
- Your primary diagnosis is obsessive compulsive disorder or major depressive disorder
Additional reasons for the eating disorder group:
- You take psychiatric medication and your dose has changed in the 2 weeks before the scan
Additional reasons for the healthy volunteer group:
- You currently meet the criteria for any psychiatric diagnosis
- You have any history of binge eating, purging, self-induced vomiting, or misuse of laxatives or diuretics
- You have taken any medication known to affect mood or concentration in the last 3 months
