Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had a stroke on the left side of the brain, either from a blocked blood vessel or a bleed, and whose stroke is considered long-term (chronic)
- People who spoke English fluently before their stroke, based on their own report
- People aged 18 or older
- People who are at least 6 months past the date their stroke occurred
- People who have been diagnosed with aphasia (difficulty with language) and trouble naming things, confirmed using a specific language assessment called the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stroke or brain injury affected the right side of the cerebellum (a part of the brain at the back of the head)
- People who have a history of any other neurological condition affecting the brain (other than stroke), any brain-degenerating condition, or any psychiatric disorder
- People who have had seizures (fits) within the past 6 months
- People who have vision or hearing problems that have not been corrected, based on their own report
- People who are taking medications that are known to lower the threshold for seizures (for example, methylphenidate)
- People who are taking a type of medication called NMDA antagonists (for example, memantine)
- People who have had brain surgery or who have any metal in their head
- People whose ability to understand spoken language is severely limited, based on a specific score on the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised assessment
- People whose ability to produce spoken words is severely limited, based on a specific score on the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised assessment
- People with severe claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), those with a cardiac pacemaker or certain metal implants in the body, and people who are pregnant will not be able to take part in the MRI scanning portion of the trial
