Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 85 years old, both male and female
- People who had little to no disability in daily life before their stroke (confirm with trial site regarding the specific scoring measure used)
- People who have been diagnosed with either an ischemic (blockage) or bleeding stroke, confirmed by a specialist doctor or brain scan
- People who are between 24 hours and 3 weeks from when their stroke started or when symptoms were first noticed

Who may not be able to join:
- People who have any difficulty understanding spoken or written language as a result of their stroke
- People who have moderate or severe difficulty producing or expressing speech as a result of their stroke
- People who are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- People who are currently breastfeeding
- People whose stroke involved a specific type of brain bleed called a subarachnoid hemorrhage, as seen on a brain scan
- People who had a diagnosis of dementia or mild memory/thinking problems before their stroke
- People who have previously had a limb amputated
- People who are currently taking a type of medication classified as a primary anticholinergic (confirm with trial site for a list of relevant medications)
- People who are currently enrolled in another clinical trial testing a drug or medical procedure
- People who are currently receiving treatment for an active cancer
- People who had a previous stroke that left lasting difficulties
- People who are currently taking or have previously taken antipsychotic medications known as neuroleptics
- People who have a history of suicidal thoughts or behaviour, or psychosis — a specific mood and safety assessment will be used at the screening visit, and people who show severe depression or suicidal thoughts or attempts within the past year would not be considered eligible by the trial site
- People who have a history of seizures or epilepsy
- People who have previously been treated with the drug amantadine
- People diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
- People who have a known allergy to amantadine
- People whose liver function blood test results are above the normal range
