Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Women between the ages of 22 and 75 who are having one or both breasts reconstructed immediately after mastectomy, using a tissue expander placed in front of the chest muscle.
  • Both preventative mastectomies (for people at high risk of breast cancer) and mastectomies to treat breast cancer are acceptable reasons for the surgery.
  • Both nipple-sparing and skin-sparing mastectomy techniques are acceptable.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People where the surgeon finds during the operation that the skin left after the mastectomy is too thin or not healthy enough for the planned type of reconstruction.
  • People having reconstruction on both breasts where the other breast is being reconstructed using a method that places the implant under the chest muscle.
  • People whose reconstruction plan involves placing a permanent implant directly, without first using a tissue expander.
  • People who are pregnant.
  • People having reconstruction at a later date, rather than at the time of the mastectomy.
