Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who have had an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blockage), with symptoms starting within one week before being admitted to hospital
- People whose brain MRI scan shows clear evidence of an ischemic stroke (strokes that do not show up on imaging, or mini-strokes called TIAs, are not included)
- People who spoke English as their native language before their stroke (based on self-report)
- People whose stroke severity score (a measure of neurological function called the NIHSS) is below 8 at a follow-up visit around 30 days after the stroke
- People who have a low disability score (called mRS 0–2, meaning little to no disability) at that same 30-day follow-up visit
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a bleeding stroke (where blood is found on a head CT or MRI scan)
- People who have a major blockage in a large blood vessel in the brain
- People showing certain brain function problems such as difficulty speaking or understanding language (aphasia), or difficulty being aware of one side of their body or surroundings (neglect)
- People with a known history of dementia or a psychiatric illness that is not well managed
- People with hearing or vision loss that has not been corrected
- People who are unable to attend the required treatment or follow-up sessions
- People who are unable to travel to the University of Maryland at College Park for specialised brain scanning sessions (called MEG)
- People who have certain metal devices or implants in or near the head (such as a cardiac pacemaker, intracranial clips, metal implants in the eyes, or metal implants within 10mm of the head) that would interfere with the MEG brain scan
- People who have claustrophobia, obesity, or any other reason that would make it difficult to remain in the MEG scanning machine for up to one hour
