Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People who have had an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) confirmed by an MRI scan
  • People whose stroke involves a blockage in a specific large artery in the brain (known as the M1 and/or M2 segments)
  • People for whom doctors have determined are eligible for clot-dissolving medication and/or a procedure to physically remove the clot
  • People who have signed a consent form, or whose next of kin has signed on their behalf
  • People who have a French social security number

For the optional sub-study (ancillary study), additional criteria apply:

  • People already enrolled in the Hibiscus Stroke II patient group
  • People (or their next of kin) who have signed a separate consent form for the sub-study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are unlikely to be able to attend a follow-up appointment at Pierre Wertheimer Hospital in Lyon, France, three months after joining
  • People who have cancer that is actively spreading or not under control
  • People who have had their civil rights removed (confirm with trial site)
  • Women who are pregnant, or women who could become pregnant and cannot provide proof that they are not currently pregnant
  • For the optional stool sample part of the study: people who have taken antibiotics in the past 3 months, used probiotic or gut health supplements in the past 3 months, have had certain bowel or stomach surgeries, have Crohn's disease or a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, have had a specific stomach ulcer caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori within the past year, or are taking part in another study that aims to change gut bacteria

For the optional sub-study (ancillary study), additional criteria apply:

  • People for whom an MRI scan using a contrast dye called gadolinium is not safe
  • People for whom a heart MRI scan is not safe or is not possible
  • People whose kidneys are not filtering blood well enough (a specific kidney function measurement below 30ml/min)
  • People who have a history of coronary artery disease (blocked or narrowed arteries supplying the heart)
