Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People whose eye examination shows an open drainage angle (a specific measurement of eye structure graded 3 or 4 on the Shaffer classification scale)
- People whose glasses or contact lens prescription falls between +3.00 and -8.00 diopters
- People whose best vision with glasses or contacts is 20/25 or better
- People who fit into one of three groups: (1) those with early-stage glaucoma showing vision field changes limited to one half of the visual field, who are able to stop glaucoma medications for four weeks; (2) those with early signs of glaucoma damage to the optic nerve but no confirmed vision field loss yet; or (3) healthy control participants with no family history of glaucoma, normal eye scan results, normal visual fields confirmed by a glaucoma specialist, and a small cup-to-disc ratio as assessed by a glaucoma specialist
Who may not be able to join:
- People with corneal problems or other eye conditions that prevent reliable eye pressure measurements
- People with a retinal disease that affects the nerve fiber layer of the retina, such as vitreomacular traction, as determined by a glaucoma specialist
- People who have a type of glaucoma caused by another condition (called secondary glaucoma)
- People who have had eye surgery in the past, other than straightforward cataract surgery or a specific laser eye pressure procedure (laser trabeculoplasty)
- People for whom stopping glaucoma medications for four weeks would not be safe
- People whose eye movement or inability to focus makes it impossible to obtain clear eye scan images
- People with unreliable visual field test results
- People who have smoked at any point in the past six months
- People with a cataract graded at level 2 or higher on a standard lens clarity scale
- People with a diagnosis of diabetes, high blood pressure, or another known blood vessel disorder such as vasculitis
