Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a man or woman aged 51 or older
- You have a reduced blood flow to your legs, shown by a specific test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI) of 0.9 or less in at least one leg (confirm with trial site)
- If your ABI is slightly above 0.9, you may still qualify if a heel-rise exercise test shows your blood flow drops significantly during activity (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have severe circulation problems in your legs, such as pain at rest or wounds that won't heal due to poor blood flow
- You have previously had an amputation of part or all of a foot or leg
- Your ability to exercise is mainly limited by something other than leg pain, such as chest pain, joint problems, or serious lung disease
- You have had surgery to improve blood flow in your legs, or orthopedic surgery on your legs, within the last 3 months
- You use a walking aid other than a simple cane (such as a walker or wheelchair)
- You currently have an active cancer diagnosis
- You have significant kidney disease (confirm with trial site)
- You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or higher (a measure of weight relative to height)
- You are unable to fit into the special water-circulating trousers used in this study
- You score below 23 on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini-Mental Status Examination
- You have reduced ability to feel temperature sensations in your leg
- You have certain metal implants or devices in your body that are not safe for MRI scans, such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, certain clips or pumps, cochlear implants, or neurostimulators (confirm with trial site)
- You experience claustrophobia, are unable to lie flat, or cannot fit inside an MRI scanner (note: you may still join parts of the study that do not involve MRI scanning — confirm with trial site)
