Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are aged 18 years or older but under 85 years old
• People who are scheduled to have a mastectomy (surgical removal of a breast) for a new breast cancer affecting one breast

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have had a previous breast cancer surgery with a cut larger than 2 cm
• People who have long-term dependence on opioid pain medicines, or who have been taking any regular pain medicines for more than 3 months
• People who have a medical reason that would make a specific type of nerve block (called an erector spinae plane block) unsafe — this includes active infection in the chest area, infection or cancer at the injection site, severe spine deformity, a history of spinal surgery, or serious blood-clotting problems (confirm with trial site)
• People who are unable to communicate before their operation due to severe dementia, serious hearing loss, language barriers, or advanced illness
• People who have a history of cancer in another part of the body, or who currently have cancer in another organ alongside their breast cancer
• People who have a history of heart disease (such as narrowed arteries, a previous heart attack, or previous heart procedures), significant liver or kidney problems before surgery, a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, or who are classified as having very severe overall health problems under a standard medical rating system (ASA classification IV or above)
• People who have an allergy to a local anaesthetic medicine called ropivacaine
