Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • You are having minimally invasive surgery to remove part of the esophagus (the food pipe) using keyhole techniques, either with a camera-guided approach or with robotic assistance
  • You are willing to give your informed consent to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have had gallbladder inflammation or kidney/urinary stones in the past 3 months
  • You have a history of blocked arteries in the legs, stroke, or heart attack
  • You have a lung condition such as pneumonia, collapsed lung, emphysema, or air-filled lung blisters
  • Your heart function is significantly reduced, or you have notable narrowing of the heart's arteries before surgery
  • You already have a chest drainage tube in place before the operation
  • You are a heavy drinker (for men: more than 4 drinks in one day or more than 14 per week; for women: more than 3 drinks in one day or more than 7 per week)
  • You regularly take high doses of strong painkilling medications (opioids) — for example, 60mg or more of morphine daily, or equivalent strong painkillers, for a week or longer
  • You have painful skin conditions such as rashes or blisters in areas relevant to the procedure
  • Your surgery is changed to open surgery (a larger cut) rather than keyhole surgery
  • You have significant breathing difficulties after surgery, or you need a breathing tube for more than 24 hours after the operation
