Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with localised oesophageal squamous cell cancer (a type of throat/food pipe cancer) confirmed by a tissue test, at a stage that is not suitable for surgery (either because surgery is too risky medically, or because the person has chosen not to have surgery), and who are suitable for combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment
• People aged 18 to 70 years old, of any sex
• People who are generally active and able to carry out daily activities with little or no limitation (based on a standard medical fitness scale called ECOG, scored 0 or 1)
• People whose cancer can be measured or tracked on scans, according to standard measurement guidelines
• People whose blood counts and organ function meet specific healthy levels — including adequate white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, kidney function, and liver function (confirm with trial site for exact values)
• People with an expected survival of more than 6 months
• People who are able to use an approved form of contraception during the treatment period and for at least 3 months after the last treatment — this applies to women who could become pregnant and men whose partners could become pregnant
• People who have voluntarily agreed to take part and have signed a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have developed a fistula (an abnormal opening or tunnel in the body) caused by the cancer spreading into nearby tissue
• People who have uncontrolled fluid build-up around the lungs, heart, or abdomen that has needed to be drained or treated in the 2 weeks before joining the trial
• People who are known to be unable to tolerate, or whose cancer has not responded to, the chemotherapy drugs specified in this trial
• People who have already received any other treatment for this cancer, including immunotherapy (such as drugs targeting PD-1 or PD-L1), radiotherapy, targeted therapy, or other cancer treatments
• People who have an active autoimmune disease, a history of autoimmune disease that could return, or who have had an organ transplant or bone marrow/stem cell transplant from another person
• People with a history of scarring or inflammation of the lung tissue (such as pulmonary fibrosis or interstitial lung disease), or other serious uncontrolled conditions affecting the whole body
• People who have a severe ongoing or active infection (including tuberculosis) that requires antibiotic, antifungal, or antiviral treatment at the time of joining
• People with a known history of HIV infection
• People who have had another cancer in the past 5 years, with the exception of certain fully treated skin cancers or non-invasive cancers of the breast or cervix
• People who have received a live vaccine within 28 days before joining the trial
• People who are currently participating in another clinical trial that involves a treatment
