Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had their first-ever ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) and are either more than 3 months or more than 6 months into recovery
- People who still have lasting movement or motor difficulties in one or both arms following their stroke
- People whose stroke occurred in the upper part of the brain (above the brainstem)
- People aged 18 years or older
- People who are willing and able to provide written agreement to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People for whom MRI scans or a type of mild brain stimulation called tDCS are not safe or suitable (confirm with trial site)
- People with a known diagnosis of epilepsy or who have had an epileptic seizure at any point
- People who have an electrical implant in their body, such as a deep brain stimulator
- People whose medical history suggests they may have had more than one previous stroke
- People with severe nerve damage (polyneuropathy) or poor blood circulation in the limbs that seriously affects the movement or sensation of the arm
- People currently misusing drugs or alcohol
- People currently experiencing a severe psychiatric condition, such as psychosis
- People with significant cognitive (thinking and memory) difficulties, as measured by a standard assessment score of 23 or below
- People with other serious uncontrolled medical conditions, such as unstable heart rhythm problems, uncontrolled heart or blood vessel disease, or severe arthritis
