Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are able to understand and agree to participate by giving informed consent
- People who have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer (either squamous cell or adenocarcinoma type) or cancer at the junction of the esophagus and stomach, where a surgeon has determined the cancer can be surgically removed and a treatment plan involving chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery is in place

Who may not be able to join:
- People who are unable to give informed consent
- People with severe heart failure (classified as NYHA Class III or IV, meaning significant limitations in physical activity — confirm with trial site)
- People whose liver function test results are more than three times the upper limit of the normal range
- People who have a known allergy to the drug itraconazole
- People who have a positive pregnancy test
- People with a particular heart rhythm measurement (QTc interval greater than 450 milliseconds) will not necessarily be excluded, but the treating doctor will monitor their heart rhythm closely throughout the trial using regular heart tracings (EKGs) to check for any significant changes (confirm with trial site)
