Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults aged 18 or older, whether currently hospitalised or attending as an outpatient
  • People who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder according to standard diagnostic guidelines (DSM-5)
  • People who are willing and able to give their own consent to take part in the study
  • People who are fluent in English
  • People who have a moderate-to-severe lack of awareness of their own illness, as measured by specific rating scales used by the research team
  • People who have been on a stable dose of antipsychotic medication (and any other regular medications) for at least 2 months, with no expected changes to that dose during the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are unwilling or unable to give their consent to participate
  • People who use hearing aids or cochlear implants, or who have ongoing ringing in the ears (tinnitus), jaw joint problems, or a related condition
  • People who have had eye surgery in the past 3 months
  • People who have had ear surgery in the past 6 months
  • People who currently have an active ear infection or a hole in their eardrum
  • People who have been diagnosed with a balance or inner-ear (vestibular) disorder
  • People who have an unstable or serious physical illness, or a significant neurological condition, including a history of heart disease or seizures
  • People who are currently experiencing active thoughts of suicide or harming others
  • People whose thinking is severely disorganised, as measured by a specific rating scale used by the research team
  • People who have had a problem with substance dependence (other than caffeine or nicotine) within the past month
  • People whose urine drug test comes back positive at the screening visit
  • People who have metal implants or a pacemaker that would make an MRI scan unsafe
  • People who are pregnant
