Who might be able to join this trial:
- People scheduled for planned (non-urgent) heart surgery involving coronary artery bypass grafting and/or heart valve surgery and/or surgery on the upper part of the main artery from the heart (the ascending aorta), whether for the first time or as a repeat procedure, where a heart-lung bypass machine is used during the operation.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose surgery requires the body to be cooled to moderate or very low temperatures to safely stop blood circulation during the operation
- People having a heart and/or lung transplant
- People who need surgery urgently within 24 hours, or as an emergency
- People who are unable to follow study procedures or do not have sufficient understanding of English, German, or French
- People who are unable to give their own consent to participate
- People whose heart surgery is performed using a specific minimal bypass technique (known as minimal extracorporeal circulation) (confirm with trial site)
