Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- (Drinker Group): You drink heavily — meaning you have 4 or more drinks in one sitting (if female) or 5 or more drinks in one sitting (if male) at least twice a month, AND/OR you drink more than 7 drinks per week on average (if female) or more than 14 drinks per week on average (if male)
- (Healthy Volunteer Group): You drink lightly — meaning you have 4 or more drinks in one sitting (if female) or 5 or more drinks in one sitting (if male) less than once a month, AND you drink fewer than 7 drinks per week on average (if female) or fewer than 14 drinks per week on average (if male)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have metal in your body that would make a high-powered MRI scan unsafe, including facial tattoos
- You have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) that would prevent you from lying in an MRI scanner for up to one hour
- You have any hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus) that could be made worse by the MRI or brain stimulation procedure
- You have ever had a seizure, or epilepsy runs in your family
- You are taking any medicines or substances that may lower the threshold for having a seizure (confirm with trial site)
- You have any implanted devices in your head, or devices that read body signals (such as a pacemaker) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a history of a neurological condition, such as a stroke or brain tumour
- You have had a head injury that caused you to lose consciousness for more than 30 minutes
- You are currently going through alcohol withdrawal
- You have a family history of schizophrenia, or you are currently experiencing symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions
