Who might be able to join this trial:

• Children aged 6 to 17, or young adults aged 18 to 39
• People with a known or suspected diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC) or a related inflammatory bowel condition called IBDU
• People whose UC is currently in remission or is mild to moderate in severity (based on a standard scoring system called the Mayo score, with a result below 10)
• People who are already scheduled to have a colonoscopy under sedation for medical reasons
• People whose bowel condition affects certain areas of the colon (not limited to just the very end section)
• People whose treatment has been stable — not currently on steroid tablets, and whose biologic or immunosuppressant medication has not changed in the past month
• People who are likely to be able to complete all sample collections and provide all required information throughout the study
• Note: Two control groups are also being recruited — one group of people who had a colonoscopy but were found not to have IBD, and one group of healthy individuals with no gut symptoms (who may not need a colonoscopy and could include family members of participants)

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have taken antibiotics for a week or longer at any point in the past 3 months
• People who have been taking probiotics or prebiotics at high (pharmacological) doses — though normal amounts found in yogurt or added food fibre are generally allowed
• People who have had any abdominal surgery in the past, including appendix removal
• People who had a confirmed gut infection in the 3 months before their scheduled colonoscopy
• People who have other bowel conditions unrelated to IBD (such as coeliac disease), or who have structural bowel abnormalities or movement disorders of the gut
• People who have a serious ongoing illness that requires treatment, such as cancer, heart disease, or kidney failure
• People whose UC is limited only to the very last section of the bowel (called proctitis or E1)
• People taking steroid tablets at a dose above 10 mg per day of prednisone (or equivalent)
• People who have used topical (locally applied) bowel treatments within one week of their scheduled colonoscopy
• People who recently started a new biologic or immunosuppressant medication within the past month
• People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
• People who are unable to understand or sign a consent form
