Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and are between 18 and 60 years old
  • You are scheduled to have, or have already had, surgery to remove most of your large bowel and have a stoma bag (ileostomy)
  • Your rectum (the lower part of the bowel that remains after surgery) is flexible enough and any inflammation there can be controlled using only a topical Mesalazine treatment, such as a suppository or enema

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have significant inflammation in your rectum, measured above a certain level on a medical scoring system called the Mayo Score (confirm with trial site)
  • You have poor bowel muscle control or any disease affecting the area around your back passage
  • There is any doubt about whether your diagnosis is definitely Ulcerative Colitis
  • You have previously had colorectal cancer or a serious pre-cancerous condition in your bowel
  • You have also been diagnosed with a liver condition called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
  • It has been more than 2 years since you had your bowel removal surgery
