Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who have given their consent (or had consent given on their behalf) to participate.
- People who have had an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) with noticeable neurological effects, such as problems with speech, movement, thinking, eye movement, vision, awareness of one side of the body, or coordination.
- People whose stroke symptoms started, or who were last seen to be well, less than 4.5 hours before being entered into the trial.
- People who had little to no disability in day-to-day life before their stroke (confirm with trial site for how this is measured).
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a known diagnosis of diabetes, or whose blood sugar level at admission is above a certain level (above 11.1 mmol/L).
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) below 22.
- People with a history of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma.
- People who have, or are predisposed to, a genetic condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), which affects hormone-producing glands.
- People who are not expected to live for more than 12 months, or who have a serious degenerative brain or nervous system condition.
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant within the next 12 months, or currently breastfeeding.
- People with significantly reduced kidney function, as measured by a specific kidney filtration test (confirm with trial site for exact threshold).
