Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 years or older
- People with Barrett's oesophagus (a condition affecting the lining of the food pipe) where the affected area meets specific size requirements — either spreading around at least 2 cm of the food pipe with a total length of no more than 18 cm, or a smaller circular spread with a total length of at least 4 cm (confirm exact measurements with trial site)
- Cohort 1: People who have been referred for assessment of abnormal or precancerous cell changes in the food pipe — ranging from uncertain cell changes through to early-stage, low-risk cancer — detected either through routine biopsies or through a previous tissue removal procedure within the last 18 months
- Cohort 2: People who have a known Barrett's oesophagus diagnosis but no detected cell changes in the last 18 months, and who are already attending regular monitoring check-ups
- People who are able to give written consent and understand what taking part in the trial involves
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have visible growths or raised areas in the food pipe (as classified by a standard medical grading system) at the time of the trial's testing procedures
- People who have had a tissue removal procedure that revealed a higher-risk cancer — for example, one that has spread more deeply, is poorly formed, has spread into blood or lymph vessels, or was not fully removed
- People who have had an endoscopy procedure with tissue sampling or removal within the past six weeks
- People who have had surgery on the oesophagus (food pipe) or stomach, other than a specific anti-reflux operation called Nissen fundoplication
- People who have previously had ablation therapy (a treatment that destroys tissue) on the food pipe
- People who have varicose veins in the oesophagus (swollen veins in the food pipe)
- People with an ongoing, unresolved alcohol or drug dependency that may affect their ability to understand consent or follow trial instructions
