Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 40 or older, of any gender
- People who have been diagnosed with COPD, defined as having smoked more than 10 pack-years and either having reduced lung function on breathing tests or showing signs of emphysema on a chest CT scan (confirm with trial site for virtual visit variations)
- People who have had a pain level greater than 3 out of 10 (on a numeric rating scale) for more than 3 months
- People who report being able to walk at least one block, bend at the hip, and shift weight from one leg to the other
- People who are able to complete an 800-foot walk while wearing a Fitbit device that accurately tracks their steps (confirm with trial site for virtual visit variations)
- People who have access to a computer or smartphone with an internet connection, or who are willing to use computers available at the study site
- People who have the ability to participate in video calls with both audio and video
- People who are able to understand and agree to the study terms and are willing to attend follow-up visits
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a COPD flare-up (worsening of symptoms) in the past month
- People who have unstable heart conditions, such as active coronary artery disease, heart failure, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- People whose blood oxygen level drops below 85% during a short walking test (confirm with trial site for virtual visit variations)
- People who are considered at high risk of falling, assessed by an inability to complete five sit-to-stand tests from a chair
- People who are unable to walk
- People who are unable to fill out questionnaires
- People who are unable to record step count data for at least 7 out of 10 days at the start of the study
- People who are currently dealing with active substance abuse
- People who have been participating in a regular exercise program (such as MOVE! or Gerofit) or a Tai Chi program in the past 3 months
- People who are currently taking part in another interventional research study
- People who are currently receiving hospice or end-of-life palliative care
- People who are undergoing a medical treatment that could significantly increase pain, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy
