Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged over 40 who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis
- People who are scheduled to have their first single-knee replacement surgery (on one knee only, for the first time)
- People whose ultrasound results show moderate to severe inflammation and thickening of the tissue lining the knee joint
- People who have been referred to the Pre-Admission Clinic at University Hospital
Who may not be able to join:
- People scheduled for a knee replacement on both knees, a partial knee replacement, or a repeat knee replacement surgery
- People whose osteoarthritis is caused by a genetic condition (such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)
- People who have a known inflammatory joint condition or another rheumatic disease, or who are taking certain medicines used to modify the immune system or treat rheumatic diseases (such as methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine, or similar drugs) — note: having gout does not automatically prevent participation
- People who have had a steroid or joint-lubricating injection into the affected knee within the 12 weeks before their Pre-Admission Clinic appointment
- People who are not able to read, write, or understand English, as study instructions are provided in English only
- People who have circumstances that would make attending follow-up appointments difficult, such as financial limitations, living far from the clinic, or not having access to a phone
- People with cognitive difficulties or psychological conditions that would make it hard to understand and follow study instructions
- People who would not be able to attend the standard post-surgery follow-up visits
