Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), confirmed as "probable" or "certain" using a specific medical classification system
- Your ALS affects your spine, the muscles used for swallowing/speaking (bulbar), or your breathing (respiratory form)
- Your cough strength, measured by a peak flow test, falls between 160 and 255 litres per minute
- You have not used a mechanical cough assist device (a machine that helps clear your airways) for more than 10 sessions in the past year
- You are able to use the cough assist device yourself, or you have a carer who can help you use it
- You are already receiving physiotherapy sessions at least twice a week
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a psychiatric condition or significant cognitive difficulties that would make it hard to take part in the study (confirm with trial site)
- You have a medical reason why using a mechanical cough assist device would not be safe for you (for example, a collapsed lung)
- You do not have a sufficient level of French to understand the study and complete the questionnaires
- You are currently taking part in, or have previously taken part in, another research or care programme focused on breathing or respiratory function
- Your breathing situation is urgent and the cough assist device would need to be set up within less than one week
- During the study, if a serious medical reason develops that makes using the device unsafe (for example, a broken rib from a fall), you may no longer be able to continue
- During the study, if your physiotherapist is unwilling to participate, you may no longer be able to continue
