Phase 1 (System Design & Feasibility Study)

  • People who have had a stroke on one side of the brain only
  • People between 20 and 80 years old
  • People whose arm movement after stroke falls within a specific range, as measured by a standard assessment called the Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity scale (score of 20 to 60)
  • People who are able to follow instructions and describe their experience verbally during the study

Phase 2 (Treatment Comparison Study)

  • People who are more than 6 months past their stroke
  • People between 20 and 80 years old
  • People whose arm movement after stroke falls within a specific range, as measured by a standard assessment called the Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity scale (score of 20 to 60)
  • People who are able to follow instructions and take part in assessments and treatment sessions

Who may not be able to join:

Both Phases

  • People who have been diagnosed with a severe type of communication or language difficulty that affects understanding (known as global or receptive aphasia)
  • People who have a severe condition affecting their awareness of one side of their body or surroundings (known as severe neglect)
  • People who have significant other health conditions that could affect arm use, cause pain, or interfere with their ability to see or hear properly during the study
