Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have regular menstrual cycles, have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), or are an athlete, and are between 18 and 45 years old
  • You test negative for pregnancy at the start and end of each cycle during the study
  • Your menstrual cycles are between 24 and 34 days long
  • You know the lengths of your last 3 menstrual cycles
  • You are able to travel to a clinic in Calgary regularly for ultrasound appointments during the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • For people with regular cycles: You have not been releasing eggs (ovulating) in your last 3 cycles
  • For people with regular cycles: You are currently taking, or have taken in the last 3 months, medications that affect ovulation — such as birth control pills or fertility drugs
  • For people with regular cycles: You have a known condition that affects ovulation or fertility, such as PCOS, endometriosis, a recent pelvic infection (within the last year), a pituitary gland tumour, or you are exclusively breastfeeding
  • For people with regular cycles: You have had surgery that affects your menstrual cycle, such as removal of the uterus or both ovaries
  • For PCOS and athlete groups: You are currently taking, or have taken in the last 3 months, medications that affect ovulation — such as birth control pills or fertility drugs
  • For PCOS and athlete groups: You have a known condition affecting ovulation or fertility, such as a recent pelvic infection (within the last year), a pituitary gland tumour, or you are exclusively breastfeeding
  • For PCOS and athlete groups: You have had surgery that affects your menstrual cycle, such as removal of the uterus or both ovaries
  • You are currently pregnant (applies to all groups)

Primary endpoints

The rise and fall of urine luteinizing hormone will predict of ovulation in all participants with confirmed ovulation; The rise in urine progesterone will confirm ovulation in all participants who have ovulated based on ultrasound; Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estrogen (E3G) changes will predict the onset of the fertile window at least 5 days before ovulation in participants with confirmed ovulation
