Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are 40 years of age or older
  • People who have read, understood, and signed a consent form agreeing to take part
  • People diagnosed with moderate-to-very-severe COPD (a specific lung function measurement below 60% of what is expected, and a symptom score of 10 or more on a standard COPD questionnaire)
  • People whose COPD treatment has been reviewed and optimised by the study doctor
  • People who experience sudden episodes of breathlessness that require them to stop and rest, use extra inhaler medication, use breathing techniques, or take opioid medication for relief — on at least three days per week

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose episodes of breathlessness are mainly caused by another serious illness, not COPD
  • People with a life expectancy of three months or less
  • People who have had a sudden worsening (flare-up) of their COPD in the four weeks before joining
  • People whose COPD treatment was changed to address breathlessness in the eight weeks before joining
  • People who are unable to use the breathing device used in this study (called the PEP buddy device)
  • People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial involving a treatment or intervention
  • People who, in the study doctor's judgment, have any other condition that would make participation unsuitable or interfere with completing the study
