Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia according to recognised medical diagnostic standards (ICD-10 and DSM-5)
- People whose schizophrenia symptoms are at a relatively stable and low level, as measured by a standard symptom rating scale (a total score of 75 or below on the PANSS)
- People who have given written agreement to take part in the study voluntarily
- Women of childbearing age who are using reliable contraception
- People who have been taking antipsychotic medication (one or two medications, including long-acting injectable forms) chosen to suit their individual needs, following current treatment guidelines, with the same medication and dose kept stable for at least 2 weeks before joining the study. A small amount of additional short-term medication for agitation or sleep problems may also be acceptable, within set dose limits
Who may not be able to join:
- People assessed by an independent psychiatrist as lacking the reliability or mental capacity to participate
- People who test positive for illegal drugs in a urine test (note: benzodiazepines are an exception to this)
- People who are considered to be at immediate risk of suicide
- People who have another significant psychiatric condition identified through structured diagnostic testing
- People who have another significant neurological or other medical condition
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
