Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with early schizophrenia:
- People aged 18 to 40 years old
- People with a diagnosed schizophrenia-related condition (schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, or schizoaffective disorder) that was not caused by drug use, and who have not had a previously recorded psychotic episode
- People whose psychosis began no more than 5 years ago, based on reported symptoms or treatment history
- People who have taken antipsychotic medications for a total of 5 years or less in their lifetime
For healthy volunteers:
- People aged 18 to 40 years old
- People with no history of any psychiatric condition at any point in their life
- People with no close family member (parent, sibling, or child) who has had schizophrenia or a mood disorder involving psychosis
Who may not be able to join:
For everyone:
- People with an intellectual disability
- People who have had a significant head injury
- People with a medical condition that affects how the brain works or is structured
- People who are currently pregnant or who have given birth or had a miscarriage within the past 6 weeks
- People with a significant neurological condition, such as epilepsy or a seizure disorder
- People who are not able to give informed consent to take part
- People with a current or past diagnosis of dependence on alcohol or any mind-altering substance
- People who have used substances other than cannabis or alcohol in the past year
Additionally, for people with early schizophrenia:
- People whose psychotic illness appears to be directly related to substance use or a head injury
Additionally, for healthy volunteers:
- People who regularly have trouble falling or staying asleep on more than half the nights of a typical week
- People who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome
- People who sleep less than 5 hours or more than 10 hours per night on average
