Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged between 35 and 75 years old (inclusive).
• People who have been diagnosed with either an ischemic stroke (a blockage-type stroke) or a hemorrhagic stroke (a bleeding-type stroke), where the stroke affected the left side of the brain, and where the stroke occurred between 15 days and 6 months ago.
• People who have been assessed as having aphasia (difficulty with language and communication after stroke) using a standardised Chinese-language test called the Western Aphasia Battery, with a score below 93.8.
• People experiencing their first-ever stroke.
• People whose language skills were normal before their stroke, whose first language is Chinese, and who have had at least 6 years of education.
• People who understand the trial and have signed a consent form agreeing to take part.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who also have dysarthria, a separate speech muscle condition, measured at a certain severity on a standard stroke scale (confirm with trial site).
• People whose aphasia was caused by a stroke affecting both sides of the brain, or by a brain tumour, head injury, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, or another condition.
• People who have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or cochlear implant, any metal implants in the body, a fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), or any other reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan or a brain stimulation treatment called TMS.
• People with a history of epilepsy.
• People with serious ongoing conditions affecting the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, or other major organs that are not controlled by standard medications.
• People with reduced or impaired consciousness, as measured by a standard stroke assessment scale (confirm with trial site).
• People with severely high blood pressure that is difficult to control (malignant hypertension).
• People with a serious illness such as cancer where life expectancy is estimated to be less than one year.
• People with severe hearing loss, severe vision problems, significant cognitive (thinking and memory) difficulties, or who are otherwise unable to participate in the trial activities.
• People with severe depression, severe anxiety, or another diagnosed mental health condition that would prevent them from completing the trial.
• People who have received brain stimulation treatments — such as TMS or transcranial electrical stimulation — within the 3 months before enrolling.
• People with a history of alcohol dependence, drug abuse, or other substance abuse.
• People whom the research team considers unsuitable for the trial based on other findings.
• People who would be unable to attend follow-up appointments due to where they live or other practical reasons.
• People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant (or for whom pregnancy is possible) during the trial period.
• People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial.
