Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have persistent or permanent atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat that does not return to normal on its own), or people who have occasional episodes of atrial fibrillation and have previously had a stroke or blood clot travelling to another part of the body.
- People whose risk of stroke is considered high, based on a scoring system called CHA2DS2-VASc that takes into account factors such as heart failure, high blood pressure, age, diabetes, previous stroke, vascular disease, and sex — a score of 4 or higher is required.
- People who have been taking blood-thinning tablets (either a Vitamin K antagonist or a factor Xa inhibitor) for at least 90 days before joining, and for whom there is no plan to stop taking these medications during the trial.
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age.
- People who currently have a blood clot in a part of the heart called the left atrial appendage.
- People who have previously had a procedure to close off or remove the left atrial appendage, whether by surgery or a keyhole procedure.
- People who have previously had a keyhole procedure to close a hole in the heart (atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale closure).
- People who have previously had a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (ablation), unless the atrial fibrillation has clearly returned at least 30 days after that procedure.
- People who have an atrial fibrillation ablation procedure planned within 90 days of joining the trial.
- People currently being treated with a specific type of blood thinner called a direct thrombin inhibitor (confirm with trial site).
- Women who could become pregnant, unless they agree to use effective contraception for the full duration of the study.
- People whose life expectancy is estimated to be less than 2 years.
- People who are unable or unwilling to give their informed consent to take part.
