Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have been diagnosed through a tissue test (pathology) with squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus that has spread to other parts of the body (stage IVB, M1)
  • People whose general health and ability to carry out daily activities falls within an acceptable range, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical scale (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have not previously received any treatment for their cancer
  • People whose blood counts, kidney, liver, and heart function are at levels considered safe enough to receive chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as assessed by the trial team

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose oesophageal cancer is not the squamous cell type, or whose cancer is a mix of squamous cell and other cancer types
  • People whose cancer the trial doctors consider may be treatable with surgery
  • People who have cancer that has spread to the lining around the lungs (pleural metastasis), or who have fluid build-up around the lungs or heart related to their cancer
  • People who have previously received any treatment for oesophageal cancer, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy
  • People considered to be at high risk of bleeding in the digestive tract, or of developing a hole or abnormal opening in the oesophagus
  • People with a nutritional assessment score of 9 or higher on a specific nutrition screening tool called the PG-SGA (confirm with trial site)
  • People with unstable heart conditions or symptoms
  • People with a history of certain lung conditions, including inflammation of lung tissue, lung scarring (fibrosis), or other serious uncontrolled lung disease
  • People with an active autoimmune disease or a history of autoimmune disease
  • People with a weakened immune system, or who have an active infection requiring treatment throughout the body
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who currently have a second unrelated cancer, or who have had another cancer diagnosed within the past 5 years (with some exceptions for certain fully treated skin cancers or cervical pre-cancers — confirm with trial site)
