Who might be able to join this trial:

• People whose pain level falls between 40 and 95 on a standard pain rating scale (called a Visual Analog Scale) at the time of initial screening.
• People who have experienced daily pain for at least 12 weeks, based on their own report or their medical records.
• People who score 30 or below on a questionnaire that measures pain-related negative thinking (called the Pain Catastrophizing Scale).
• People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) below 40.
• People who are willing to keep their current non-medication pain treatments (such as physical therapy) unchanged and not start any new ones during the study.
• People who are willing to stop all medications taken for chronic pain during the study, except for one allowed rescue medication.

Who may not be able to join:

• People with certain serious heart rhythm problems, including second- or third-degree heart block, AV dissociation, or a history of a dangerous rapid heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia).
• People who have had a procedure in the past 6 months designed to permanently reduce feeling in the area where their pain is located (such as nerve ablation).
• People who have any surgery planned during the study period, for any reason.
• People who have an acute, serious, or unstable health condition, or any other medical illness that the study doctor believes would make participation unsafe.
• People who have had cancer within the past 2 years, with the exception of certain common skin cancers (basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma) that were fully removed by surgery.
• People who have fibromyalgia.
• People who have a substance use disorder as defined by the current standard medical guidelines (DSM-5).
• People who have any significant abnormal findings at screening in their physical exam, neurological exam, vital signs, heart tracing (ECG), or blood/lab tests that the study doctor considers concerning.
• People who test positive for HIV at screening.
• People who have a history of alcohol, illegal drug, painkiller, or narcotic use disorder within the 2 years before screening.
