Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults over 40 years of age
- People who have pain at the base of the thumb that is triggered by pressure and movement
- People whose thumb base pain has not improved with previous treatments such as over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), ice, splints or braces, or topical pain relief products
- People whose X-rays or imaging show signs of arthritis at the thumb base, classified under the Eaton-Littler system (stages 1 through 4)
- People who have read and signed the informed consent form, showing they understand what the trial involves
- People who are covered by health insurance
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a known allergy to either of the treatment products used in the trial
- People whose pain management routine or other symptom treatments for their hand condition were changed within the four weeks before joining the trial
- People who have arthritis affecting a nearby joint in the wrist area (scaphoid-trapezial arthritis) that is causing symptoms
- People with a current local or whole-body infection
- People who have had previous surgery on the thumb being studied
- People who have had a previous injury to the thumb being studied
- People who have an inflammatory arthritis condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis
- People with severe or poorly controlled high blood pressure
- People who have a condition called De Quervain tendinopathy affecting the thumb area
- People who have had an injection into the thumb base joint being studied within the previous 6 weeks
- People with uncontrolled diabetes
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding; women of childbearing potential would need a negative pregnancy test before receiving the injection (women who are not able to become pregnant due to surgical procedures or who are aged 50 or over with at least 12 months without a period may be eligible without needing a pregnancy test — confirm with trial site)
- People with a weakened immune system
- People who currently use nicotine products, or who have stopped using them within the last 12 months
- People who are under legal guardianship or who are not fully independent in decision-making
- People who are already taking part in another clinical trial that may interfere with this one
- People who, in the trial investigators' judgement, would be unable to follow the trial requirements
