Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a type of cancer) of the anal canal or anal margin, confirmed by a tissue test. This includes certain related cancer cell types (such as basaloid or cloacogenic).
• People whose cancer is at a stage that has not spread to distant parts of the body, based on standard cancer staging guidelines (confirm with trial site).
• People whose treating doctor considers them suitable for radiation therapy, either alone or combined with chemotherapy, as their main treatment.
• People who are 18 years of age or older.
• People who are reasonably active and able to care for themselves, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool called the ECOG performance scale (scores 0–2, meaning fully active to capable of self-care but unable to do heavy physical work).

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have previously received chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or major surgery intended to cure their anal cancer.
• People who have previously had radiation therapy to the abdomen or pelvis in a way that would overlap with the radiation treatment area used in this trial.
• People who have a history of another type of cancer, unless they have been free of that cancer for at least 2 years and their doctor considers the risk of it returning to be low. An exception applies for people diagnosed and treated within the past 5 years for cervical cancer in situ, or basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin — those people may still be considered eligible.
