Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are scheduled to have a minimally invasive esophageal (food pipe) surgery for cancer, abnormal cell changes in the food pipe, or problems with how the food pipe moves food
• People who are 18 years of age or older
• People who are able to understand the study and are willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a history of a heart rhythm problem called atrial fibrillation (either ongoing or occasional) or a related condition called atrial flutter
• People who have had a serious reaction to a heart medication called amiodarone in the past, or for whom that medication is not considered safe (for example, due to lung, liver, or thyroid problems)
• People who are already taking amiodarone as a regular daily medication before surgery
• People who develop an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation during the surgery itself
• People who are pregnant (a negative pregnancy test is required on the day of surgery for people who could become pregnant)
• People who are currently breastfeeding or chest feeding
• People whose esophageal surgery was started but not completed
• People whose heart electrical reading (called an ECG or EKG), taken within the last 30 days, shows a certain measurement called QTcF above 500 when their heart rate is between 60 and 100 beats per minute
• People with a resting heart rate between 50 and 59 beats per minute may require additional heart testing before the trial site can confirm eligibility — this involves checking whether the heart rate rises sufficiently during light exercise or a formal stress test (confirm with trial site)
