Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • Both men and women are eligible
  • People who have been newly diagnosed with active mild or moderate ulcerative colitis, diagnosed according to American College of Gastroenterology guidelines
  • People currently being treated with a medication called mesalamine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with severe ulcerative colitis
  • People who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer
  • People currently using steroid treatments, whether taken by mouth/injection or used rectally
  • People currently using immunosuppressant medications or biological therapies
  • People whose treatment with a medication called sulphasalazine has previously not worked
  • People with a known allergy to the medications used in the study
  • People who have had surgery to remove all or part of their colon
  • People with significant liver disease, such as liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, NASH, or NAFLD
  • People with other inflammatory diseases
  • People with thyroid disease
  • People with heart conditions including irregular heartbeat, reduced blood flow to the heart, or heart failure
  • People with diabetes
  • People currently taking antioxidant supplements, including vitamins A, C, or E, selenium, or co-enzyme Q
  • People currently taking any of the following medications: amlodipine, levothyroxine, low-dose aspirin, warfarin, atorvastatin, insulin, oral diabetes medications, or chemotherapy
