Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who are scheduled for a planned leg artery surgery, either as a routine or urgent procedure — this includes certain types of bypass surgery or procedures to clear or repair a leg artery
- People who have access to a telephone for follow-up calls after surgery
Who may not be able to join:
- People for whom a spinal or epidural anaesthetic (a needle placed in the back to numb the lower body) is not safe — for example, due to blood clotting problems, an infection near the injection site, high pressure in the skull, low blood pressure, or a severe heart valve condition
- People having surgery because of a traumatic injury to an artery (such as from an accident)
- People with multiple sclerosis or other conditions that affect the protective coating around the nerves in the brain or spinal cord
- People with a rare condition called malignant hyperthermia, or whose care requires avoiding certain anaesthetic triggers related to that condition
- People who are pregnant
- People who have already taken part in this study before, or who are currently in another research trial that could affect the results of this one (some exceptions may apply if the two study teams agree in writing)
- People whose surgeon, anaesthetist, or other treating clinician determines that they would not be suitable for the study's random assignment process
