Who might be able to join this trial:
As a "case" participant (people with known or suspected Barrett's esophagus):
- People between 18 and 90 years old
- People who have a Barrett's esophagus segment of at least 1cm as seen during a scope procedure, or a note of suspected Barrett's esophagus in their medical records
- People whose tissue sample results show a specific type of cell change in the esophagus (with or without pre-cancerous changes), or who have suspected Barrett's esophagus noted in their medical records
- People who are already scheduled for a clinically necessary scope procedure
As a "control" participant (people without known Barrett's esophagus):
- People who are already scheduled for a clinically necessary diagnostic scope procedure
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are unable to give their own consent to participate
- People who have difficulty swallowing that has not yet been medically investigated
- People with a history of eosinophilic esophagitis or achalasia (specific esophageal conditions)
- People currently taking blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin or Warfarin
- People taking antiplatelet medications such as Clopidogrel, unless that medication has been stopped three to five days before the study procedure
- People taking certain other blood-thinning medications (including Dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or edoxaban), unless stopped three to five days before the study procedure
- People with a history of enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach (varices), or liver cirrhosis
- People who have had surgical removal of part of the esophagus due to esophageal cancer
- People with bleeding disorders, whether present from birth or developed later in life
- People with a history of a specific type of pre-cancerous change in the esophagus called squamous dysplasia
- People who have had cancer of the pancreas, bile duct, stomach, or nearby areas within the past 5 years
- People who have received chemotherapy or radiation therapy to treat cancer of the esophagus or the chest area
